Matty Barnes – Setter
Matty is one of the setters in the Turning section. He’s responsible for calibrating and running the machine, checking on parts and keeping control of the components on the line.
He looks after the quality, changing the inserts in the machine and ensuring it is sized to the specification of the component. Collectively this is done with digital gauges like Hommels, but he will manually inspect the first few off the line and make any adjustments necessary.
Matty has been with Erlson for 19 years and has been involved in the manufacture of the shaft part of the turbocharger componentry. Prior to that he worked for another engineering company in the telecoms sector.
Like many of the people here at Erlson, he really likes the people he works with. He also likes to understand where the final components end up so that he can gain a little sense of what he has been involved in making. Getting a sense of accomplishment that way is really important to him.
A typical day from Matty is to first of all pick up where the last shift left off, checking machines for any issues and take it from there. He ensures parts are kept to tolerance and quality specifications and passes any issues to his seniors.
Outside of work he is a fan of Everton for his sins and enjoys spending time with his family, with three children, a 6, 8 & 21 year old they certainly keep him busy.
